TIANANMEN MOTHERS

The Tiananmen Mothers are a group of Chinese families—primarily parents—whose children were killed or disappeared during the violent suppression of the pro-democracy protests around Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989. Since the early 1990s, they have worked quietly and persistently to document the victims, seek truth and accountability, and demand an official reassessment of the events. Despite censorship, surveillance, and political pressure, they have continued to collect testimonies, publish open letters, and commemorate those who died. Their efforts represent one of the most enduring civil-society attempts in China to preserve historical memory, pursue justice for victims, and advocate for human dignity and transparency.
